I started driving electric
cars more than five years ago because they are quiet and fun to drive. Over the
years I started the to appreciate the lack of combustion smells inside and
outside the electric vehicle (EV). In October 2022 I was shocked by an article
in a national newspaper linked
here with the title Toxic air pollution particles found in lungs and brains of unborn
babies.
I had heard about micro-plastics in seafood but was unaware that toxic
pollution could be found in our cells and even in organs of unborn children.
Sadly, I have started thinking people who drive cars that burn fossil fuels as
if they are cigarette smokers. So, I wrote this article to bring attention to
things we can consider doing to reduce the pollution we ar
e responsible for.
1. Ask your utility company to offer you on off-peak discount rate. My
utility offers me electricity at 90% discount between 00:30 and 04:30. They can
afford to do this because the UK has cheap offshore wind generated electricity
available at night that, so the utilities want people to consume it as reduces
demand during the day that is provided by burning oil and gas.
2. Buy a battery for your home. I have 10KWh battery in my attic that
charges during the off-peak discount window. The Tesla Powerwall is an example
of such a battery. I use batteries from Growatt that are less costly.
3. Add solar panels to any south facing roof your home may have. This
will top-up the home battery during the day if needed. In the summery months you
can rely more on the solar panels and less on the battery storage.
4. Drive an EV that you can charge at night at home using wind and solar
during the day. It does not create toxic air pollution.
